Mangai Pachadi - Tamil New Year Recipes

Tamil New Year is celebrated on the beginning of the month Chithirai. At South India Tamil year is celebrated elaborately at most temples. Chithirai Thiruvizha is very famous in Madurai Meenakshi Temple. The same is celebrated as Vishu in Kerala.
The 14th of April is the beginning of the first month Chittirai of the Tamil year, which is celebrated as the New Year. This day is also popularly known as Varusha Pirappuv. This is an auspicious day for all Tamilians. The food eaten on the day is Mangai Pachadi

Mango pachadi is typically prepared during Tamil New Year festival in Tamil Nadu. This can be prepared with or without addition of fresh neem flower.

When prepared with neem flower, it symbolizes all 6 tastes (Arusuvai)


Inipu/Sweetness from jaggery
Pulipu/Sourness from mangoes
Uvarpu/Salty from salt
Karpu/hot from chillies
Thuvarpu/Saline from mangoes
Kasapu/Bitterness from neem flower

Ingredients
  • Raw mango -1 no (peeled and cut into small pieces)
  • Jaggery –small piece
  • Red chillies powder – 1 tsp
  • Green chillies -2 no
  • Turmeric powder -pinch
  •  
Seasonings
  • Oil -2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Urad dal – ½ tsp
  • Hing - pinch
  • Curry leaves –few sprigs





Method


1.Peel and chop the mango into medium sized cubes.
2. Keep all the other ingredients aside.
3. In a sauce pan boil the mangoes and green chillies with 3/4 cups of water (The water should be enough to immerse the mangoes. 
4. Add turmeric powder, and salt and cook for around 7 to 10 minutes in medium flame with the pan closed. Cover and allow to cook until the mango pieces soften. 
5. Add the crushed jaggery until it dissolves and the mixture thickens slightly. 
6. Finally sprinkle the neem flowers on the top (you can add the fried neem flowers also).
7. Heat oil in a pan and season with mustard, urad dal, curry leaves and red chilies. 
8. Add the tempered seasonings to the cooked Mango pachadi.Enjoy your Tamil New year with your family and friends.

Notes

If the mango is too sour, u may have to add more jiggery and add more water to cook the mango to remove the sourness.
