1. Soak raw rice in water for 4 hours. Drain the water and grind it to a smooth paste. Leave it for another 4-5 hours.Fry coconut bits in a little ghee and keep it aside.paste the banana or chop into very fine pieces.
2. Melt jaggery to make thick syrup.Grind the rice along with the jaggery water. Add cardamom powder, sesame seeds, fried coconut bits, cooking soda and mix well. Keep this batter for 2 hours in fridge
3. Mix it well and the batter should be semi thick. Like iddli consistency) Now add banana pieces.Heat a paniyaram pan, add a tsp of oil + 1/2 tsp of ghee in each hole of the appa chatti or paniyaram pan. When the oil is hot, lower the flame to medium and pour the enough batter to the pan pits to fill.
4. When the bottom of Unniyppam get a golden brown, turn it with a spoon and cook the other side too. Once cooked, remove and drain it. Repeat the same process for the rest of the batter.Now Kerala traditional Unniyappam is ready.
Notes
You will get soft unniyappams only if rice is soaked for so long and fermented.
